Why My Terrariums Are Made from Acrylic
Christian St-PierreAll of my terrariums are handmade in my workshop in Lac-Delage, Quebec, using high-quality 4.5 mm clear acrylic.
This choice was not made by accident. I use acrylic because it allows me to achieve a level of precision, finish, and customization that is much more difficult to obtain with glass, especially in detailed and decorative designs.
The goal is simple: to create terrariums that are durable, clear, well-crafted, and visually distinctive.
Exceptional Clarity to Showcase Plants
Clear acrylic offers excellent light transmission, which is a real advantage for orchids, seedlings, and other plants grown in a terrarium.
It also helps maintain a clean, bright appearance without making the structure feel visually heavy. The eye is drawn first to the plant, not to the material.

Greater Design Freedom Than Glass
One of the major advantages of acrylic is cutting precision.
This material allows me to create very fine, detailed, and complex cutouts with an extremely high level of accuracy. That is what makes certain patterns possible—whether inspired by lace, Victorian architecture, or highly refined ornamental work.
This type of result would be far more limited, far less precise, or simply unrealistic to produce in the same way with glass.
Permanent Engraving and Personalization
Acrylic also allows me to integrate permanent engravings directly into the terrarium.
These engravings are not elements added afterward. They are part of the piece itself and contribute to its distinctive character. I can also personalize certain models with a word, a name, or a message for a wedding, celebration, or special occasion.
This makes it possible to offer a more personal piece without compromising the quality or consistency of the design.
A Durable and Practical Material for Everyday Use
I use 4.5 mm acrylic selected for its strength, clarity, and quality of finish.
It is a durable material, lighter than glass, and especially well suited to the construction of detailed structures. It is also easy to clean with a damp cloth, helping preserve its clear and polished appearance over time.
A Choice That Fits the Way I Build
I am not simply making containers for plants.
I design and build each terrarium by hand with the goal of creating a botanical object that is refined, precise, and durable. Acrylic is the material that best supports this approach, because it gives me the freedom to go further in detail, finesse, and personalization.
That is what allows me to offer terrariums that are not only functional, but truly distinctive.
